À 83 ans, le pianiste Kenny Barron est l’une des rares légendes encore vivante ayant traversé autant de périodes créatives du jazz. De Dizzy Gillespie à Yusef Lateef et de Freddie Hubbard à Ornette Coleman, en passant par Joe Henderson, Chet Baker et Buddy Rich, le musicien américain s’est confronté à tous les styles en s’adaptant d’une manière phénoménale, tout en gardant son style si empreint de tradition. Il voulait depuis longtemps enregistrer un disque avec ses chanteurs-ses préférés-es et c’est ce qu’il a fait dans « Songbook », son dernier album en trio avec Cécile McLorin Salvant, Jean Baylor, Catherine Russell, Kurt Elling, Anne Hampton Callaway, Tyreek McDole et Ekep Nkwelle. Cette dernière est une des nouvelles voix à suivre absolument, entendue notamment chez Emmet Cohen ou Endea Owens.
